…and Madama Reale said yes

A professional chocolate chef

Maria Giovanna Antonia Nemours. This is a name that wrote an important page in the history of chocolate in Turin. This is the name of Madama Reale, ruler of the Savoy throne from 1675 until 1684. It was she who, in 1678, granted a “license” to chocolate maker Giò Antonio Ari, authorizing him to sell as well as process and produce chocolate.

Until that time, makers of chocolate-based beverages were not allowed to sell it: they were confectioners and liquor venders – called limonadier in Turin – and many of them came from the court circles. Only cafè owners could serve chocolate along with coffee and other hot and cold beverages.

With Madama Reale’s provision, the cicôlatè ‘d Turin became a high-profile figure: making chocolate is not only a renowned art, but also a profitable profession.
